If it's one thing Iowa seems to be lacking is decent Mexican food. I thought that until I stumbled upon El Super Burrito. With such an Americanized name, I was a little skeptical but since I was desperate I decided to try it out. There is menu is fine, especially if you've been to those little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants in large cities. They have a little bit of everything, so no matter what you're craving in terms of Mexican food they'll certainly have it. I went with a steak burrito platter, which included a large burrito, rice, and beans, as well as pico de gallo (in which I asked for extra and received with no extra charge). I was very satisfied with the food. I've tried other "Mexican" restaurants in Cedar Rapids and none of them can hold a candle to this place in terms of food and service. Seriously, every time I've been there I've received my food in two minutes and everything still tastes so fresh. Their cashiers are also very friendly and will help you find something you'll like. Overall, I highly suggest trying El Super Burrito out. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Having lived in California my whole life up until my recent upheaval, I must say I felt a little less homesick here while eating. Holy Guacamole! It serves one of the best guacamole I have ever had. Super fresh and mostly avocado, which is amazing for anywhere, let alone the midwest. I tried four different meats in my street tacos, and all were delicious. The salsas were fantastic. Hubby got the super burrito, which he enjoyed a ton. Love that they serve some good beers as well. Everyone was super friendly. And despite it being of sensitive nature, my stomach never got upset afterward, meaning their food was fresh, non-greasy, and had a minimal of additives. Can't wait to go back!

It's a small, unassuming place with authentic, humongo burritos. Don't expect Americanized Mexican with lots of salt. The food flavor really comes though. The fajitas are great, and the guacamole is fresh and fabulous. The bakery has some really awesome Mexican pastries I love, sinfully placed right by the door so you have to walk by the case as you leave. It's not fancy - it's a walk-up counter, so don't expect to be waited on hand and foot. Step off your high horse and eat your delicious burrito.

Love their tres leche cake.....they make great cakes and pastries .... However if you are ordering a customized cake be sure to take them what you want written on it in person. We called our order in one time and ended up with a cake that had spelling errors. They said they didn't have more frosting and it couldn't be fixed....I was persistent and ended up getting frosting from them and fixing it myself right there in their establishment. Other than that their creations are great. I've never had their lunch or dinner but it always smells great!

Don't come here expecting bastardized tacos with crunchy u-shaped shells. This place is tasty, fresh, and how it should be. I love the chicken torta sandwich (on a home made roll), and I like the hot sauces right on the table.

I used to live in Southern California for many years and this transition to the Midwest has left me with a big vacant taco shaped hole in my heart. Finally. FINALLY. I have found a sanctuary. This was my first time there, so there was only so much I could eat, but I tried EVERY TACO (except the lengua, they were out ) Perfectly priced at $1.75, well seasoned and juicy. I went back for a second round of just the chorizo (my fav!) and finished with a miraculously moist tres leches cake. I will return. Oh yes. I will return.

This is my favorite Mexican joint in CR. I'm going to suggest the tamales if they are not sold out, with the chorizo street tacos coming in a close second. My kids also love the fresh churros and other pastry items.

Love this place! Best burrito in Cedar Rapids! Fairly cheap and awesome compared to other Mexican franchise restaurants

The food here is awesome! Its more slanted towards what we expect for "mexican" food, tacos, burritos etc. But it is done right! I've never had a bad meal here. All of the sauces are amazing. The building is nothing fancy, you order at the counter and they bring it out to your table when its ready. The service is always good, and your food comes out in short order. Great food done right. It will make your mouth happy!

Honestly the food is somewhat underwhelming. It's not bad, but it's not great either. I've tried the asada and the lengua. Both seemed somewhat bland and underseasoned if they were seasoned at all. Though when you walk in you get hit with the smell of the pastries, which smell really good.

This is the best Mexican restaurant there is in Cedar Rapids. Burrito Ahogado is the best way to go. Fill it with the alambre or the man anything is good in there. They make some damn fine food here. The lengua is about the only place to get any decent lengua in Iowa. The churros are great. the Tres Leches is good. Can't beat the price either. The only part of the authentic Mexican food is Montezuma's revenge.

Sorry, but this is not very "authentic," unless "authentic" means Midwestern-Mexican. Yes, the lengua, chorizo and Mexican sodas and beers (and gratifying lack of chimichangas) may push it in that direction, there is still an abundance of shredded iceberg lettuce and shredded cheese (along with a rather liberal hand with the rice spoon). Honestly, it feels like the owner/chef went with the local conventions rather than opting to push the boundaries. Too bad -- it's a sad underestimation of the local tastes. But if you are looking for solid, inexpensive Midwestern-Mexican fare, El Super is fine. Specific pluses: + prompt service + fish tacos + the burritos arrive toasted on top + plenty of seating Minuses: - the tacos are made with flour tortillas rather than corn (although the tacos are soft, a plus) - why is there rice in the tacos? ¿por qué, por qué, por qué? - shrimp tacos ... kind of weird and not in a good way - the main vegetables are shredded iceberg lettuce, avocados and tomatoes -- no calabacitas, poblanos, chipotles, pimientos, chiles or anything else indicative of the bounty available in Mexico (and from small Iowa farms) - blah spicing -- the sauces at the tables were OK (and needed), but if there was a leaf of cilantro, epazote or any other spice (other than salt) in my food, it was not obvious.

FANTASTIC MEXICAN FOOD!!! We order lunch here once a week or so and the entire office orders. The food is excellent! I personally love the fajitas and their queso dip. I wish they had a website with an online menu.

My favorite "Real" mexican restaurant in CR. I used to hit the owners lil taco cart when he had it on 1st Ave and not to many knew about them. Awesome street tacos... Real street tacos. And they stayed the same when the family bought this place, they just expanded the menu to huge burritos, tortas, and you name it. As well as it allowed his wife's bakery to expand (Lupitas). You must get some for desert when finished or take for the road. I remember when they first opened and I had to order in spanish only. Its not a problem anymore. Great prices too! so you cant beat it for the real deal. Sometimes it gets crowded for lunch so plan accordingly, but they are quick to fill orders usually. They expanded from the cart, to the restaurant/bakery, then outdoor seating, then inclosed and bigger room for tables for a more sit-down if desired. I hope they stop there, cuz I like the small quick real mex type of vibe. You can get cow tongue and other real mex goodies if you're up to it as well. Also, order the tamales when you can, she makes batches daily and they fly.

I'm taking the time to write this because I think it serves the best tacos and burritos in Linn County for sure, perhaps Linn and Johnson combined. It's not as clean-looking and comfortable as other establishments with its fare but when grabbing to go or actually on a lunch break, that matters very little to me. Service is excellent and the bakery attached has authentic pastries. I would recommend them to anyone.

My latest favorite menu item are the Tortas (sandwich) see photo. You order it with your choice of meat, (I got lengua, that means steak, right?) and topped with shredded lettuce, peppers and guacamole on a lightly grilled homemade bun. It is outstanding! Their guacamole is the best I've had anywhere, not much heat but always very fresh. ESB is also home to Lupita's bakery. Which is basically a small self-serve case with great pastries, cookies, churros and other Mexican delights. You can special order other items like birthday cakes.

El Super Burrito is one of those no frills hole in the wall joints. The food is good, but kinda boring. Like most authentic ethnic cuisines, its not the Americanized bastardization of Mexican food we've all come to expect in this country. And that can be good or bad, depending on what you're looking for. Don't come here hoping for the food you'd find at Chipotle, Qdoba, or Carlos O'Kellys. The service is pretty much nonexistent. I don't expect too much from a place where you order at the counter off a menu written on a white board, but a smile and pleasant demeanor would be nice. They bring your food to your table when it's ready, set it down, and walk away. The 'dining room' could use a little attention too. The set up is odd and it's not as clean as it could be. El Super Burrito is Ok, just that, just Ok. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there, I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone. On the other hand, it's not a bad choice if you're nearby and looking for a no perks meal.

I've been coming here for years. Love it. Best burritos in town. Chips and salsa are amazing as well, it comes with a nice surprise... guacamole. Eat here weekly/biweekly.

Quite simply the best Mexican spot in Cedar Rapids. Inexpensive, fast service, good food, not pretentious.

Smells DELICIOUS right when you walk in!!! The "SUPER BURRITO" was average size but was very good. You have got to try the tamales!

This is my favorite little mexican restaurant in Cedar Rapids. As some one else said, the tacos are exceptional. Recently the dining room expanded making it a little more comfortable for eating in. And now they serve beer too. You can order a three taco dinner platter for about six bucks and the choices for tacos are great. I usually order one beef, one chorizo, and one pork. I love the seasoning and the flavors of the tacos and the cilantro adds just the right kick.

This is a decent place but not a four star restaurant. If you like a good burrito and enjoy your typical fast food style mexican, this is the place for you. They do have an AWESOME bakery that they sell some good treats in, but their menu is average.

Having lived in California for 20 years, many visits to Texas, Arizona and Mexico....this place is Mexican food "Cedarized". Greasy, excessive cheese, and not even close to Mexican food...it's just another Cedar fast food place equal to Chilis....

I like this place's burritos. Their food is almost as good as El Perico in Marion, but not quite. The bakery is pretty good, too.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
